La Traviata Performed for Italian Students at AHS

A trio of musicians from Italy performed an abbreviated version of La Traviata at Arlington High School Thursday for Italian students. Italian teacher, Tony Di Sanzo, organized the visit with the support of the Italian Consulate in Boston and C.A.S.IT -- the organization that has supported the Italian program at AHS with grants since 2012. In addition to La Traviata, the musicians also performed a number of traditional Italian songs. The performance was magical!

Italian Students Visit "Eataly" in Prudential Center

Students in Tony Di Sanzo's Italian classes took a field trip to the newly opened Eataly in the Prudential Center this week. As part of the excursion, students were sent on a scavenger hunt to learn about the different Italian food products sold there, such as the wide range of cheeses, olive oils, and pasta, as well as which region of Italy each one comes from. As a final project, students will place the food items on a map of Italy.

Chariot Race in Latin Class

To celebrate the recent snow storm, a chariot race was undertaken in Ms. Holt's middle school Latin classes. A student read a Latin prayer, the class made a sacrifice of a stuffed animal lamb, and then the patron of the games (Ms. Holt mostly) signaled the start of the race. Students raced around a mini Circus Maximus with two students pulling the "currus" or chariot (a sled) one being the "auriga" or charioteer. Students had a list of various things to yell in Latin to encourage each other. The race lasted only about 15 minutes due to the cold, but fun was definitely had by all.

Some of the handout:
Sacrificium: Iuppiter, te hoc ture ommovendo bonas preces precor, uti sies volens propitius urbi nostrae populoque.

STAB THE LAMB!

Ludi Incipiant!

Latin Cheers:

  • Agedum!- Come on!
  • Macte!- Good job!
  • Macte virtute!- Good job, bro!
  • Celerrime!- Faster!
  • Euge!- Well Done!
  • Ego russatis/albatis/venetis/prasinis faveo!
